TULSA, Oklahoma – January 19, 2023 – Tulsa International Airport celebrated the opening of a new art exhibit by Megan Torres this evening titled, “A History through Dance.” The exhibit features photography from Torres Fine Art, wardrobe pieces, and history information that highlights Tulsa’s Ballet Folklórico group, Tierra Mestiza.

Tierra Mestiza has been a part of the community of Tulsa since the late 1990s, became a non-profit organization in the early 2000s, and is going on almost 25 years of spreading the culture of Latin America with dancers of all ages and audience members alike.

The wardrobe pieces that are displayed are 100% handmade locally by a Hispanic seamstress from Zacatecas, Mexico, while the hairpieces are created by the Director of Tierra Mestiza, Rafael Espitia-Jasso. Tierra Mestiza has performed in over 100 locations throughout the state of Oklahoma including locally at OU, OSU, and University of Tulsa.

“Breath, endurance, passion, laughs, and family. These words are what come to mind when I think of Ballet Folklorico Tierra Mestiza, because dancing is not for the faint of heart. It is for those who have the flames of inspiration and honor of culture; that is what brings us together,” said artist Megan Torres, who is responsible for bringing this exhibit to the airport. “We could not be more excited to have this representation of Latin American culture at the Tulsa International Airport for all to see.”

The exhibit is located pre-security, in the Concourse A Meet and Greet area. This area sees thousands of passengers a day, and millions of passengers a year. The exhibit will be on display for one year, and is part of the airport’s rotating art program. The airport’s Cultural Advisory Group, which is comprised of local artists, representatives from local art organizations, and airport staff, work together to select art to be displayed at the airport.

“Art at the airport is vital to a community,” said Cultural Advisory Group Chair, Ken Busby. “Art showcases our region’s uniqueness, history, and culture to those that may be lifelong residents or first-time visitors. We are excited to showcase this new exhibit and impact our traveler’s experiences in a positive way.”
